O Asiatico
A Journey of Taste and Design
Chef Kiko’s latest restaurant, O Asiatico, is a vibrant homage to his transformative first trip to Asia—a journey defined by exploration, culinary mastery, and a deep appreciation for the diverse food cultures he experienced. Nestled in the heart of the historic Principe Real neighborhood, O Asiatico occupies a beautifully restored eighteenth-century building, seamlessly blending old-world charm with modern design and cuisine.
The entrance to the restaurant is a striking ode to Asian spice boxes, painted a deep, rich Chinese red and adorned with 270 niches, each filled with carefully selected glass bottles containing spices and exotic ingredients sourced from the continent. This immersive introduction sets the stage for a dining experience rooted in history and rich cultural homage.
The journey continues up the staircase, where Chef Kiko’s own photography is prominently featured. Enlarged prints capture candid moments of farmers, street vendors, and artisans from his travels, creating a vivid narrative that celebrates the people and traditions behind the flavors. Suspended overhead, a collection of rattan chicken cages has been reimagined with lighting, infusing the space with a touch of whimsy and local color.
At the bar, the Asian theme is elevated through an impressive 17-foot wall of decorative objects, each piece chosen to complement the restaurant’s ethos of authenticity and global influence. The bar’s signature cocktail, Shochu, has become a favorite among patrons, enjoyed alongside the artful wire sculptures by Tom Hill. These sculptures, titled Papa Arroz, depict birds native to rice paddies in Asia, adding an element of cultural storytelling to the space.
The main dining room on the ground floor is designed as a collection of spaces, including the chef’s table and an inviting open-air patio. The six-seat chef’s table, served by Chef Kiko himself, offers guests a unique and intimate view into the kitchen, enhancing the dining experience with a connection to the art of cooking. A striking addition, a 30-foot tree planted within the main dining area, brings a casual, greenhouse-like atmosphere that bridges indoor and outdoor elements.
The patio, open year-round, boasts a custom-designed dimensional tile wall that adds texture and visual interest, while an outdoor fireplace ensures warmth and comfort in any season. Together, these design elements combine to create an environment that is not just a restaurant, but an immersive journey that celebrates the vibrant diversity of Asian cuisine and culture.
